Koh Samui Introduction
Until being developed as a major tourist destination in the 1990s, Koh Samui was a little-known island inhabited by a small population of coconut and rubber farmers, offering nothing except swathes of white sand with turquoise waters lapping at its shores.
Fortunately, the beaches remain unchanged, albeit rather more crowded than they were 15 years ago, and though tourists possibly outnumber locals in peak season, the island has managed to retain a modicum of rural charm. Luckily, too, the authorities have managed to resist the lure of building high rise hotels, choosing instead to house their visitors in (mainly) quite attractive wooden bungalows and Thai-style accommodation.
Although it would be foolish to come to Samui expecting much more than fun in the sun, there are a few diversions available if you tire of lazing on the beach or bathing in the warm ocean that surrounds it. Two of the most popular activities are snorkelling and diving and there are plenty of opportunities for both among the coral reefs off the coast of Samui itself and in the waters of nearby islands such as Koh Tao or Koh Tan.
Much of the interior of the island is covered in rainforest interspersed with rubber plantations and a number of waterfalls, which provide a superb contrast to the coastal areas and are definitely worthy of exploration.
As Samui has become more touristy, so its nightlife has developed to cater to all its foreign visitors' tastes. Though you're unlikely to see very much of the "real" Thailand in the bars and clubs of the island, you certainly won't be stuck for something to do and an increasing number of people are coming to the island to enjoy its nightlife as well as its beaches.
