Burundi a small country in Africa is a fascinating mix of mountains and lakeside communities. Years of civil war has played havoc to its tourism industry but as the war has come to a cease the country is slowly but steadily making for the lost time. And its efforts are started paying off if increasing footfalls are any measure. Tourists have started flying to Bujumbura, the capital city situated on the banks of Lake Tanganyika, and jumping off point for many tours in the vicinity. Here is what this small country has on offer to tourists.

Saga Beach

Saga beach is a spectacular beach and one of the most visited attractions in Burundi. The beach with white powdery sand is loved by locals and foreigners alike. This 5km stretch of sand is situated northwest of capital and referred by locals as Plage des Cocotiers (Coconut Beach). Presence of several restaurants in the vicinity also adds to the popularity of this beach. Its tranquil atmosphere also makes it a hot favourite among family vacationers.

Musee Vivant

Forgotten during the civil war, the tiny zoo is trying to regain its position as a ‘living museum’. The zoo is currently not in good shape and animals are placed in cramped spaces. The zoo might take some time to become visitor friendly.

Central Market

This covered market is one of the largest shopping hubs in Burundi and walking through its maze like corridors is an experience in itself. The market is divided into two sections; one selling fresh produce and another second hand items donated from the west.

Lake Tanganyika

Estimated to be the second largest freshwater lake in the world in terms of volume, the lake is one of the most popular draw cards in the country. Due to its ecological isolation the lake is home to several species of endemic fishes.

La Pierre de Livingstoneet Stanley

This historic place has a rock where presumed encounter between Livingstone and Stanley took place on 25 November 1871. Most of the tourists flock to this destination that commands a great historical significance.

Burundi National Museum

Situated in Gitega Burundi national museums is a fine place for those in love with art and culture. The museum houses a fine collection of collections of musical instruments, weapons and witchcraft tools.

This small country has no big attractions but it is not bland either as it has several things to engage for few days.
