Yangon Exudes an Old World Charm

Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar is fast emerging as a destination with a difference. This city of 5 million people may not be as affluent and glamorous as its Asian peers but it certainly has something that gives it an edge over others. The city which has not gone under a rapid development appears as a city that seems frozen into the times when it was ruled by British. The visitors can found several symbols of that era. People keep frequenting this city which charms its admirers with its golden pagodas, impressive archaeological sites and great cultural.

Shwedagon Paya

Shwedagon Paya is one of the most important landmarks in Yangon and one of the most sacred sites for the Buddhist devotees. With its 325ft zedi, decorated with 27 metric tons of gold leaf and thousands of diamonds is visible from almost everywhere in the city. It is a common belief that it is the place where eight hairs of the Gautama Buddha are enshrined. This impressive pagoda is one of the most unique experiences Myanmar has to offer.

Sule Paya

Sule Paya or Sule Pagoda is another important religious site in Yangon. Situated in the heart of the city this 46m octagonal structure was build some 2000 years ago. Besides being a magnificent structure, the pagoda offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Botataung Paya and Mailamu Paya are other major attractions in the city.

Apart from being a hub of Buddhist religious sites the city also houses some beautiful places of worship for Christians; Holy Trinity Cathedral and Saint Mary's Cathedral are prominent among them.

Plant and animal life

This most important city in Myanmar is also a great place to see plant and animal life of the region. For a good grasp of the animal life of the region, the guest should visit Zoological Gardens founded by the British in 1906. The garden houses an extensive range of species from this region. Snake Dance and Elephant Circus held during public holidays are highly popular among the guests.

A visit to Mahabandoola Garden is also recommended. On your visit to the gardens you will see rose garden and the Independence Monument that marks Myanmar's independence. The garden offers a stunning view of the surrounding. People’s Park with its stunning water fountains is also popular among vacationers. Apart from these the city is also home to beautiful lakes like Kandawgyi Lake and Inya Lake.

Other attraction

The city is home to several other attractions; Aung San's House, Aung San Suu Kyi's House and Bahadur Shah Zafar Grave are popular attractions. National Museum with a great collection of historic artefacts is also a great attraction.
