Conakry, the capital of Guinea, attracts a large number of travellers with its interesting sights and sounds. The city is musical, colourful, friendly and wild – all at the same time. Like all other cites, Guinea’s capital also has its share of problems but it doesn’t stop it from becoming a hot favourites among people from around the world. This economic, commercial and financial hub of the country inspires many to take flights to Conakry as it elegantly combines business with leisure. The city may not have the wealth of big attractions, nor have glamorous nightspots but it certainly have an aura that keep tourists engaged for a day or two. Here we turn spotlight on major tourist attractions in Conakry.

Palais des Nations

One of the most popular attractions in the city, Palais des Nations was to host the Organisation of African Unity conference in 1984, but the conference was cancelled following the death of Sekou Touré. The magnificent Palais des Nations was the office of the president before it was destroyed in the February 1996 army rebellion. On their visit to the city, the travellers will come to see the ruins of the palace. Adjacent to the palace, there are 50 Moorish-style villas, built to house African presidents during the conference meeting. These villas are now used as residences and offices.

Grande Mosquee

Built with the financial support from Saudi Arabia, Grande Mosquee was inaugurated in 1984.the building has an inner hall that can accommodate 10,000 worshippers. The mosque doesn’t allow visitors inside but tourists can inquire at the Islamic Centre next door about arranging a tour. Even if you are not able to go inside you can catch its impressive views from the outside.

Oppo Atelier

Oppo Atelier is a tourist attraction with a difference. Originally it is an association of welders that creates funky sculptures from scrap metal near the Palais du Peuple. On your visit you will see several statues of different sizes.

Musee National

Musée National houses the large collection of masks, statues and musical instruments. The museum may be small in size but it stuns traveller with its large collection. It's modest, but interesting. Woodcarvers and drum-makers sell their exhibits on the museum grounds.

Botanical Garden

If you want to have a peek into the flora of the region then visiting Botanical Garden could be an ideal decision. The garden is one of the coolest places in the city but lacks cleanliness.
