Dhaka a city with medieval charm

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh is one of the newest capitals in Asia. The political, economic and cultural hub of the country boasts of a great historical background that you may come across during your visit to old part of the city. A large number of historical building ranging from the Mughal Empire to British Colonial rule are present in their original glory making it a hot favourite among the vacationers. Being the hub of independence movement of Bangladesh has awarded Dhaka with several monuments and landmarks. And visitors flying to Bangladesh never miss an opportunity to visit Dhaka which is main airport and gateway to Bangladesh. In an era where every city is known for its skyscrapers and symbols of modernity, Bangladesh attracts tourists’ attention with its traditional charm, thus inspiriting travellers to visit Dhaka. Here we turn spotlight on major tourist attractions in Dhaka.

Liberation War Museum

The beautiful colonial building of Liberation War Museum gives a lowdown on Bangladesh War of Independence (1971) that claimed lives of several innocent Bangladeshi people. You will see several graphic exhibits and personal items that come with a story. A large pile of human skulls and bones are also on display that might disturb you. The museum also has a large courtyard where cultural performances are held regularly. The complex also has a small bookshop that sells books related to Bangladesh history among other things.

Lalbagh Fort

The half built Lalbagh Fort along with its garden gives a respite from the hustle bustle of the old city. The fort transport you back to the Mughal past and look stunning during the early morning. The park, on which construction work was begun in 1677 by Prince Mohammed Azam, the third son of Emperor Aurangzeb, never got completed. But even this half completed park is a star attraction among vacationers.

National Assembly Building

National Assembly Building is one of the finest specimens of well known American architect Louis Kahn whom Pakistani government entrusted with the task of designing a regional capitol for East Pakistan. The task was not completed until 1982 due to liberation movement and ensuing war. This building is now known as a Jatiyo Sangsad Bhawan.

Ahsan Manzil

Ahsan Manzil also known as the Pink Palace is one of the must see attractions in the capital of Bangladesh. The building was built on the site of an old French factory by one of the wealthiest landlords Nawab Abdul Ghani in 1872. But sixteen year later the building was destroyed by a tornado. After restoration the building looks grander than before.
